A Taste of the Name
Sloppy Joe’s History

The name Sloppy Joe’s traces back to the early 1930s in Havana, Cuba, at a bar owned by Jose Garcia. Known for its wet floors from melting ice, patrons nicknamed it a “sloppy” place. It’s rumored that the famous Sloppy Joe sandwich—based on Cuba’s ropa vieja—originated there. Ernest Hemingway, who frequented both the Havana club and Key West, helped bring the name to Florida.

In 1937, his friend Joe Russell renamed his speakeasy in Key West to Sloppy Joe’s, which became one of Hemingway’s favorite haunts. In 2002, that iconic spirit was brought to Treasure Island, where beachside dining, cold drinks, and live entertainment continue the tradition. Our Story
